About the Artist...? Susan Rae Hill was born in Irving, TX, on July 17, 1967. The adult contemporary vocalist's first single -- recorded using her mother's maiden name of Ashton to avoid confusion with Kim Hill -- gained an audience with CCM radio listeners around America in 1991, and made her album Wakened by the Wind the biggest-selling debut in the history of the Sparrow label. Ashton reached number one in the Christian charts two more times that year, received a Dove award for New Artist of the Year and won a CCM readers and reporters poll for Best New Artist. Her second album, Angels of Mercy (1992), proved her staying potential: it spawned four CCM number one singles and was nominated for a Grammy in the Best Pop Gospel Album category. Ashton won the 1993 CCM readers award for Favorite Inspirational Album and a reporters poll for Best Female Artist. She narrowly missed capturing Dove awards for Female Vocalist of the Year, Inspirational Recorded Song of the Year and Contemporary Album of the Year. Also in 1993, Susan Ashton married John David Cunningham and released her self-titled third album, with two singles charting number one. She was nominated for a 1994 Dove award in the category Female Vocalist of the Year. Ashton also branched out that year, recording Down the Road with Margaret Becker and Christine Dente. The Muncie Symphony Orchestra was founded in the summer of 1949 by a group called Friends of the Orchestra. Dr. Robert Hargreaves was its first Music Director, serving in this capacity for 33 years. Dr. Hargreaves was tireless in building the organization, recruiting faculty members to teach at the BSU School of Music and play in the orchestra. New faculty members with musician spouses were especially valued!? ? Dr. Hargreaves' method of staffing the orchestra shaped a unique model: faculty members are principal players and sections include some of their students. In few other organizations of any kind do faculty and students enjoy this kind of mentoring, yet collaborative, relationship. Players from tri-state area orchestras and professional-quality musicians from the local community round out the orchestra's roster.? ? Upon Dr. Hargreaves' retirement, the Board of Directors hired Leonard Atherton as the new Music Director. A native of England, he joined the MSO and Ball State University in 1982. In addition to his duties conducting the MSO, he taught graduate and undergraduate conducting classes at BSU and conducted the Ball State Symphony Orchestra. Atherton resigned as music director at the end of the 2002-03 concert season.? ? The Muncie Symphony Orchestra consists of approximately 70 musicians; 18% faculty, 52% professional musicians from tri-state area and 30% students. All subscription concerts are performed in the John R. Emens College-Community Auditorium on the campus of Ball State University (seats 3,000+) and in Sursa Performance Hall (seats 500+). Besides 5 classical series subscription concerts, the MSO performs 3 chamber series concerts that take place in various locations in Muncie. MSO also has 3 free community concerts each season: a free outdoor concert on the Ball State Arts Terrace (Symphony on the Green) in June, a Young People's Concert for elementary students in Emens Auditorium in winter or spring and another outdoor concert Picnic and Pops in August. The MSO's outreach programs inlcude Westminster Friends of the Orchestra series and Music on the Move, school outreach program, where ensembles visit schools every week of the school year to introduce young audiences to classical music and the instruments of the orchestra.? ? Muncie Symphony League has been working to support the orchestra since 1955. The League plays an important role in promoting the orchestra, and raising funds through such projects as "Lunch with the Artist," the annual subscription drive, Garden Tour, and other community projects. Guest artists over the years have included Aaron Copland, Arthur Fiedler, Roberta Shaw, Dave Brubeck, The Empire Brass, Andr??-Michel Schub, Victor Borge, Doc Severinsen, Dmitry Sitkovestsky, Bella Davidovich and Marvin Hamlisch.
